Zenkoji
Zenkoji temple in Nagano.

Zenkoji is one of the most famous Buddhist temples in Japan.

The temple has a long history, and it is due to this temple's existence that city of Nagano was formed.

The temple has a strong influence on the buildings around it, and the atmosphere of the structures is very unique. A sake factory is one of the attractions near the temple.

The Zenkoji temple has origins to year 602 A. D. when Yonda Yoshimitsu brought and enshrined an image of Amida Buddha in the temple.

It become a welcoming place for pilgrims in Japan at that time. The main temple is from year 1707 and is a masterpiece of it's own. There are various events and festivals and several millions of people visit there every year.

Inside the temple is a wooden, smiling buddha statue that can be touched by everyone. The wooden surface of the statue has became glossy because of so many hands rubbing it constantly. It is very rare and moving experience to be able to touch actual Buddha statue.

The temple bell is ringed in new year, and many people go there to listen to it. The temple bell is ringed 108 times. It is Buddhist tradition that one listening the bell sound 108 times, can help us to banish our 108 desires.

Zenkoji is in center of Nagano, and easy to access from the central station.
