A Good Sequel

The Sunshine on Third Street (Always Sanchome no Yuhi) was a brilliant popular movie. The movie told a story of ordinary families living in Tokyo during Showa period. It had everything, humor, stunning visual effects, and of course, it had a beautiful love story.
The same director, Yamazaki is also responsible of the sequel, Always Zoku Sanchome no Yuhi. The movie got released in 2007 and the movie just made it's way to DVD distribution (Shogakukan) here in Japan.

Of course, after seeing watching the first movie, my expectations were high. But this movie didn't disappoint.
Always Zoku Sanchome no Yuhi simply continues where the first movie left us. Aspiring writer Chagawa is living with Junnosuke while the love of his life is working as cabaree dancer, paying off her debt. His neighbor Suzuki auto has apparently improven his business.
Some new characters are also introduced. Mika, a 7-year old relative of the Suzukis is left to stay with them when her father has business reverses. Mutsuko's old school friend also comes by, being crush on Mutsuko. Failing to become chef apprentice, he gets into a bad company. But love conquers all.
The movie is visually as stunning as the first movie was. There is a lot of CG the immersion of 60's Tokyo is believable enough. Tokyo Tower is finished and people can visit there now. There is even a very realistic model of Kodama electric train that was started 1958. The creators had a very high attention to detail.
But all the CG and humorous scenes and new events isn't enough to make a good sequel. To make a direct sequel is very hard, because of all the expectation is in the air. I also wasn't convinced after first hour. I felt the creators chose too easy way to attract the audience.
But the last part of the movie was surprising, and it shows character and spirit of the movie.
The last hour focuses on family of Chagawa and his love, and Junnosuke. I don't want to spoil anything for you here, but I was moved about the clever and beautiful ending, that complements to the entire story.
After watching these two movies, I am excited of Takahashi Yamazaki's next work.
