Sumida River

Sumidagawa

The Sumida river 隅田川, Sumida-gawa, is a river which flows through Tokyo, all the way from Asakusa to Tokyo Bay.

Sumidagawa has a special history. It is depicted by many poets and novelists throughout the decades, such as Nagai Kafu who wrote the Sumigagawa. It has also been subject for ukiyo-e artists including Hishikawa Moronobu.

When did Sumidagawa become such a nationally recognized river? Some say that it was because of its appearance in Episode 9 of Ise Monogatari. In the chapter the protagonist sees a bird (miyakodori, capital bird) and recites the poem: "If you are true to the name you bear / there's one thing I would ask you, / capital-bird: /does the person I love / still wait for me or not?"

During the Edo period, the river became popular spot for travellers and visitors through the country. Especially during spring it is popular hanami spot, thus very crowded. The view is very beautiful as white petals of cherry blossoms are raining.

There are special boat cruises from Asakusa to Kasai Park for example via river sumida. Tokyo Cruise Ship Co. operates a variety of cruise boats, these are called suijo-bus in Japanese. It is very interesting as there are several unique bridges on the Sumida River. When arriving to Asakusa, perhaps the most peculiar sight will be the Asahi Beer Building. The building is like a beer glass with mirrors (representing the foam?) and then the strange monumental piece.

During night, the boat cruise is beautiful as you can see the reflections of the city lights on the surface of the river.

Another interesting sight is the Hamarikyu garden, beautiful old garden built in 18 th century.

I recommend this cruise:

Sumida River Line (Asakusa - Hamarikyu Garden - Hinode Pier)
Asakusa - Hamarikyu: Cruising Time 35min. 620 yen
Hamarikyu - Hinode Pier: Cruising Time 5min. 100 yen
