Rivers are called 川"-gawa" kanji in Japanese language. For example, Tone River is called 利根川,Tonegawa.

Japanese people do have a special relationship to rivers as well as other parts of nature. Rivers such as tonegawa in Ibaraki prefecture or Sumidagawa in Tokyo have inspired Japanese artists throughout the times.
