History of Narita International Airport

During the 60's, Tokyo International Airport (Haneda) was becoming crowded. Haneda airport exists on land that is captured from the sea, thus it is difficult to expand it. Therefore, government made the plan to move the International Airport activity to the Chiba prefecture, which is relatively far from central Tokyo.

Going to Tokyo from the Narita Airport

Therefore, from Narita airport it is unwise to take taxi to the city as it would cost very much. Instead we recommend one of the following ways:

  1. JR Narita Express train (N'EX) (about Y1200)
  2. Limousine Bus (to Tokyo about Y3000)
  3. Keisei Express (about Y1000)
  4. Keisei Skyline (about Y1800 with reserved seat)
  5. Local train through Chiba

Taking the train will take one and half hour or two hours, depending on the line you choose. Limousine Bus is very comfortable. Nonetheless, if you choose this method, we recommend purchasing a return ticket as this will save you some money.

The same options are there. If you should take Keisei line, we recommend to enter the train in Nippori. As far as we know, they still haven't built that escalator to the station though, so get ready to carry your luggage up the stairs. If you really want to avoid this, it is possible to board the train in Ueno though.

If you want to choose the comfortable and friendly Limousine Bus, remember that you can purchase ticket from any convenience store.

Terminals

Narita Airport has two terminals, 1 and 2. The Terminal 1 got just recently renovated. It is important to check in advance which terminal your departuring flight is, as it takes some time to take the free shuttle bus or train between the terminals.
