Katakana (片仮名, カタカナ) like hiragana and kanji are forms of Japanese writing. Katakana are vocal based syllables, commonly used in foreign names, places and loan words.

Katakana's shape is contains straight and simplified lines, while hiragana has more round and organic shape.

For example ramen ラーメン (noodle soup originally from Japan) or gyoza ギョザ (Chinese dumplings) are written with katakana. Or computer keyboard キーボード (Ki-bo-do).

Jimi Hendrix got name ジミヘン (Jimihen) in Japan and Brad Pit is known as ブラッド ピット (Buraddu Pitto). Japanese actor Kimura Takuya has also nickname in katakanaキムタク (Kimutaku).
