JR

JR stands for Japan Railways. Japan Railways is government supported entity of eight companies that took over most of the operations of old national railway company on April 1, 1987.

JR operates nation wide. Some of them are separated by region. Most of the Kanto Area lines are operated by JR East company, as well as some of the Shinkansen lines.

For foreigners who want to travel in Japan by using JR Lines, JR RAILPASS is good option.

JR also operates the famous Yamanote Line in Tokyo area.
