Iaito, the main weapon of

together with a colleague, or alone. First, students use wooden bokken, sword similar in shape to katana. After students learn the basics, they are allowed to use main weapon of iaido, called iaito. Iaito is very look-a-like copy of katana, but it has no cutting blade. But usually, the top of the blade is sharp. Masters of iaido can use even real katana.
Often,people who have got bored with more physical, and bit sportic attitude of Kendo, they start to practice this more peaceful and not so physically demanding martial art. Some people also practise both of them at the same time. While learning the Japanese philosophy and bushido "the way of the warrior", they can blow off some steams with Kendo.
The main style of iaido is known as Muso Shinden ryu, while advanced students might practi ce Niten Ichi ryu kenjutsu or Shindo Muso ryu jodo. In Iaido, primarily students use hakama and special iaido coat. Also normal basic karate or aikido wear can be used in the beginning. Usually, iaido is practiced on hard wooden floor which require sometimes use of knee protection. Sometimes practice takes place also on tatami.
No socks or any kind of shoes are used; Iaido is always supposed to practice with bare foot.
Iaido is mostly about concentration. People who practice it, says that after you have started practising it, you are able to focus more easily, and forget distractive elements of everyday life. While learning Japanese customs and being polite, you also learn how to respect yourself and others.
Everyone can practise Iaido, no age or sex can be a limit. Since in Iaido, there are no competition, you might find this fine Japanese martial art very peaceful and mentally soothing.
