Setsuko Hara
(Born 17, June 1920)
Birth name: Masae Aida
Born in 17 June 1920, Yokohama, Japan. She has appeared on several films of Yasujiro Ozu, including Banshun. Her debut was in 1935 Tamerau Nakare Wakodo yo (Do not Hesitate, Young Folks) by Tetsu Taguchi. She has appeared in over 100 films, and her last film was in 1962 "Chushingura" by Hiroshi Inagaki. She is called Eternal Virgin in Japan, maybe because she mysteriously quit her job as an actress in 62. She is considered as very Japanese actress.
Japanese-German film directed by Arnold Frank was interesting part of her career. It was said to be her real breakthrough. She represents European style woman, which is quite opposite from her usual being. I believe that's where she adopted her skill to show the western looks in Yasujiro Ozu's films.
