I'd like to compile a set of phrases most helpful for tourists, for... reasons I'm not allowed to go into just yet. Sure there are plenty behind a dictionary and such, but those are just examples of how to ask yourself. There's always the problem of pronounciation, lack of confidence and such that makes threshold for starting a verbal communication very high. My idea is to write sentences generic enough to be helpful, print them on a set of cards and when needed, to show the card (with a smile). I'm not planning to cover situations such as asking what to do when giant fire-breathing hamsters land on top of Tokyo Tower and start doing a Bollywood dance scene. Just ordinary everyday situations one might need. So far I have: On the streets: "With this map, could you please show me where we are now?" 「この地図で、今のところを教えてください!」 (helps best when shown with a map the tourist is carrying). "Could you point me to the nearest ATM?" [一番近いキャッシュサービスコーナーはどこですか?」 There will be variations with station, park, toilet, post office, the usual. Although I'm not sure to whom it is most convenient to write separate cards for each variation... Any other phrases that would come to mind?
