Things to Carry, Things to Check
Aug 19th, 2006, 8:18pm

Apparently Japan is now following the US lead in banning liquids in the cabin. A friend just came up from Tokyo and said that, in addition to banning drinks, they were even taking away people's eyedrops. It wasn't clear if they gave them back at the destination. That's what they do with knives and scissors and stuff like that -- a much more civilized and polite approach than what the US does. I'll find out more when I'm at the airport on Tuesday.

It seems like the extra restrictions on liquids was very short-lived. Either they've decided that the danger is over or the complaints were just too much to handle. They still check PET bottles with some kind of detector, but that just takes a second, and otherwise there's no problem. There is a new poster up explaining about scanning boots and thick-soled shoes through the x-ray machine, and I had to do that once, but you know how it is... taking off your shoes is an everyday thing here, so nobody minds (plus they give you slippers).
