Non-descending romaji

Here's something I thought was interesting: http://www.imaginatorium.org/words/descend.htm

To summarize, mixing kanji/kana and romaji causes some problems since kanji and kana are positioned in the middle of a square box, while romaji has stuff sprouting upwards or downwards (like the pole in "b" or "p"), therefore needing more height.
Quote:
Now when it comes to forcing these two entirely different sets of principles into a single document, something has to give. And it seems to be the descender that lost out.

And so...

Let's see if we can find some other examples!

Yes, this is indeed interesting typography example. I have run into this problem several times when dealing with some word etc. documents that mixed Japanese to English - the english text just don't lo o k c oo l...

However I can't understand one thing. Generally when making company or brand logos it is common practise to transform the fonts into outlines so that the designer can freely adjust the ligatures [AV] kinda things, and alter the positions of individual letters freely. Any limitations of original fonts does not matter in the world of modern graphics software like Illustrator or Freehand.

Perhaps Matsumoto KiYoshi it's an old company and back that time when they made the original logo there was no modern Illustrator software available but they had to use manual typesetting that was only designed for Japanese typography.
