Atami is a town in Shizuoka prefecture. It is famous of the various onsen hot spas in the area.
It takes about one hour with shinkansen train to go to Atami from Tokyo. From Yokohama, you can also catch Tokaido line.
During this hour, you will realize the drastic change in scenery - the flat urban area of Tokyo changes into a mountain land of nature - and the fresh air blows directly from the Pacific Ocean.
It is truly fantastic to realize that only with one hour's ride can get you so far from the urban atmosphere. Yes, there are no skyscrapers in Atami. And relatively few foreigners go there.
Atami used to be very famous tourist place, but recently fewer people go there than ever before.
Still, many conventions and summits are kept in Atami.
Mesmerizing Atami Waterfront Fireworks Festival is celebrated every month from April to December in Atami. In Atami you can also enjoy traditional Hananomai geisha dance show, every week.
Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923, which epicentre was deep beneath Izu Oshima Island, caused 35 meter Tsunami Wave which hit the shoreline of Atami and destroyed the town, causing than 300 people to drown.
The most famous mountain in Atami is Nanaohara. A bus goes there from the station, platform 6.
